Single Moms - 5 Ways to Relieve Stress

Life as a single mom (or just plain moms) can be  pretty hectic and stressful. My mother was an incredible person but looking back she was selfless and never did anything for herself. The children came first. I think this was cultural issue and of course, I did not learn this until I spent time with her family in Japan after her death. In Japan, the mother is pretty much responsible for the health, well-being and education of the child. If your child is a failure, so is the mother.

Yes, I will do anything for my child but from my perspective if you don't take time for yourself, it's a little difficult to give to your child if your sick, mentally off or just always tired.

So to relieve the stress and just get some mommy time, here a few tips on taking time our for yourself and dammit you deserve it and no one should make you feel guilty about it.

1. Manicure/pedicure:  There is nothing more rejevenating than being pampered. And every so often I really splurge, I pay an extra $10 for a foot massage. Blissful!!

2. Massage: This is far more indulgent than a mani/pedi but the health benefits of lying naked and free from the stress of your life is worth every penny that a masseuse can bring. And 60 minutes is not enough, if you are going to do it, go with 90 minutes.

3. Yoga: Whether its a 15 minute yoga in the morning before my daughter wakes or taking a class. I am never so happy and relaxed then after taking a class.

4. Escaping to the movies: What's better than being in the dark and indulging on a big bag of caloric popcorn,  a coke (yes, a coca-cola not diet coke) and an action picture or romantic comedy. Harry Potter opens July 15 and I will be there.

5. Heading to bookstore (or library):  What's better than sitting in the corner and reading beauty magazines and the tabloids. If I have more time, I like to get the decorating books and dream a little. Very refreshing and I definitely avoid the children's book section. Remember it's all about the me if only for an hour.

Your Turn:  How do you relieve stress? and you don't have to be mom to respond because no matter the gender, we all have stress.

Money has always been tight, even now that I am remarried and no longer a single mom. So manis and pedis went out the window. But for destressing I usually take a nice walk with the dog, go to the park and look at the bay, and definitely go to the bookstore and check out what's on the shelves. Sometimes I'll even jump on my ellyptical machine and actually attempt to work out. lol

Additional suggestions: a long hot bubble bath, an reality TV marathon (nothing relaxes me than seeing a bunch of housewives slug it out), and, of course, a glass of wine.
